BREAKING: Over 56 feared killed as accidental bombing rocks market near Borno-Yobe border
No fewer than 56 people, mostly traders, are feared dead, while several others sustained injuries after an airstrike hit a weekly market along the Borno–Yobe border.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Jilli Market, located between Gubio and Geidam Local Government Areas of Borno State and Yobe State.
Sources said the strike was suspected to have happened during a military operation targeting alleged Boko Haram insurgents operating in the area.
The market reportedly attracts traders and buyers from surrounding communities, including Gubio, Chiweram, and Benisheikh in Borno, as well as Gurokayeya and Geidam in Yobe.
According to multiple accounts, the fighter jet involved in the operation was said to be tracking suspected insurgents believed to have visited the market to collect levies from traders and obtain supplies. However, the strike allegedly missed its intended target and hit civilians.
An eyewitness said at least 56 bodies had been counted, while injured victims were rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam for treatment.
“The incident happened around 2:46 p.m. while business activities were ongoing. Four fighter jets carried out the attack. We only heard loud explosions,” the witness said.
“I counted 56 corpses myself and helped rescue two injured persons to the hospital. The casualty figure may rise because more bodies are still being recovered,” the source added.
The councillor of Fichimaram Ward, Malam Lawan Zanna, also confirmed the incident, saying several victims were admitted to the Geidam Specialist Hospital, while others were referred to the Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.
He said some of those receiving treatment later died, pushing the casualty figure higher.
The Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru (rtd), confirmed the incident but stated that the affected community falls within Borno State.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Nigerian Air Force regarding the incident.
