“I will attend ADC convention in spirit” – El-Rufai
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday said he would attend the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Convention “in spirit” as legal proceedings against him continued at the Kaduna State High Court.
El-Rufai made the remark while exiting the court premises, where he is standing trial on a nine-count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
The former governor, who arrived the court around 9:00 a.m., was seen earlier speaking briefly with a loyalist about the ADC convention scheduled for Abuja.
After about four hours of proceedings, he emerged from the courtroom accompanied by his lawyers. Responding to journalists, he said:
> “I will attend, but in spirit.”
He was subsequently escorted into a Hilux vehicle under tight security provided by armed police officers and personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS).
There was heavy security presence within and around the court premises, as well as on adjoining roads in the Kaduna metropolis.
El-Rufai is standing trial alongside Amadu Sule on charges including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
The case is part of ongoing legal proceedings brought by the ICPC, while El-Rufai continues to maintain his innocence.
