Kenya’s President Ruto, fires back at Tinubu over economic comparison, takes swipe at English usage

on

Kenyan President William Ruto has responded to recent remarks attributed to President Bola Tinubu comparing Nigeria’s economic situation with that of other African countries, sparking debate across social media.

Tinubu, during a visit to Bayelsa State where he inaugurated projects, had defended his administration’s economic reforms despite rising fuel costs, suggesting Nigerians were better off than citizens in some other African countries.

His comments triggered reactions beyond Nigeria’s borders, including in Kenya, where Ruto responded in a light-hearted but pointed manner, emphasising Kenya’s human capital and education system.

The exchange has since generated widespread reactions online, with users across platforms like X debating the appropriateness of comparisons between African economies and leadership narratives.

While Nigeria continues to face inflation, currency pressures, and high energy costs, Kenya is also grappling with debt concerns and cost-of-living challenges despite its growing technology and financial sectors.

The episode has further reignited discussions on economic performance, governance, and how African leaders frame national progress in public discourse.
