Chaos erupted in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night after gunshots were reported near the venue hosting the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, forcing the evacuation of U.S. President Donald Trump and other top officials.

The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where hundreds of journalists, politicians, and dignitaries had gathered for the high-profile gala. According to reports, the suspected gunman was apprehended at a security screening area just outside the ballroom.

Security operatives swiftly rushed Trump off the stage as panic spread among attendees, with some diving under tables amid the confusion. Armed tactical teams quickly secured the venue while law enforcement agencies moved in to contain the situation.

In a statement, Trump praised security agencies for their rapid response, confirming that the suspect had been taken into custody.

“Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended,” he said, adding that he would address the press shortly.

The United States Secret Service also confirmed the arrest, noting that the incident occurred outside the main event hall, near the security checkpoint.

Top government officials, including the First Lady, Vice President, and cabinet members, were safely evacuated, with no immediate reports of injuries.

The dinner—often dubbed “Nerd Prom”—is a major annual gathering of journalists and political figures, traditionally featuring speeches and satire. Organisers initially indicated the event would continue but later announced its postponement following the security breach.

The venue itself carries historical significance, as it was the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

This latest scare adds to ongoing concerns about security around high-profile political events in the United States.
