BREAKING: PDP shifts screening for 2025 Convention, cites internal disputes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, which was originally slated for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday and obtained by Very Nigeria, the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, explained that the decision was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Fintiri assured that a new date will be announced soon and apologized to all aspirants and party members for any inconvenience caused. “A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” he stated.

He further reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, credible, and seamless national convention.

The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention had been scheduled to hold on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Earlier, on October 25, 2025, the party had unveiled a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee headed by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Eyitayo Jegede, to screen aspirants vying for various national positions.

The postponement came shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman.

This development followed reports that northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship seat.

However, the endorsement has been met with resistance from several factions within the party, including groups loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who accused party leaders of inadequate consultation.

The disagreement underscores growing tension within the party, which has recently witnessed a series of resignations and internal disputes ahead of the convention.
