10 things to know about late Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo
Alexx Ekubo was a Nigerian actor, entertainer, model and humanitarian widely known for his roles in Nollywood romantic comedies and drama films.
Over the years, he built a strong reputation in the Nigerian movie industry with appearances in more than 100 films and television productions before his reported death on May 12, 2026.
Here are 10 things to know about the late Nollywood star.
1. Alexx Ekubo was born on April 10, 1986, and hailed from Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State in south-eastern Nigeria.
Despite growing up in different parts of the country, he remained proud of his Igbo roots and often identified strongly with his cultural background.
2. Before finding fame in entertainment, Ekubo pursued an academic career in Law at the University of Calabar, Cross River State.
He also attended Federal Government College, Daura, in Katsina State, giving him exposure to different cultures and regions across Nigeria.
3. Alexx Ekubo became widely known after emerging as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant.
His appearance and confidence during the competition opened doors for him in modelling, acting and entertainment, helping him gain attention in the media and Nollywood circles.
4. Although he had earlier featured in movies, Ekubo gained massive recognition after starring in the Nollywood blockbuster Weekend Getaway.
His role in the movie helped establish him as one of the industry’s fast-rising actors and increased his popularity among movie lovers across Africa.
5. Throughout his acting career, Alexx Ekubo featured in over 100 movies and television productions.
Some of his notable films include The Bling Lagosians, Power of 1, A Sunday Affair, Zero Hour, Lagos Cougars, The First Lady, Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story.
He became known for playing charismatic, stylish and humorous characters.
6. Aside from movies, Ekubo appeared in several television series that increased his popularity among viewers.
Some of these productions include Tinsel, AY’s Crib, Secrets & Scandals, Hope Bay and Married to the Game.
His role as “JJ” in AY’s Crib was especially loved by fans for its comic delivery.
7. In 2020, Alexx Ekubo was named among the “Most Influential People of African Descent” under 40 by the United Nations.
The recognition celebrated his contribution to African entertainment and his growing influence in social development and humanitarian causes across the continent.
8. Alexx Ekubo was regarded as one of the most stylish male celebrities in Nigeria.
He regularly appeared on best-dressed lists at award shows, movie premieres and celebrity events.
His fashion choices, confidence and public image made him a favourite among lifestyle and entertainment followers.
9. Beyond entertainment, Ekubo actively supported charity programmes, youth empowerment initiatives and humanitarian projects.
In 2020, he received a certificate of excellence from Sapio Club SGD for his contribution to entertainment and humanitarian efforts in Africa.
He was also recognised as Rotary Youth Ambassador of the Year in 2023.
10. Alexx Ekubo received numerous awards and nominations for his performances in Nollywood.
He won honours at the Best of Nollywood Awards, Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards and Net Honours.
His performances in films like Weekend Getaway and The Bling Lagosians earned him praise from both critics and fans.
