Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40 after allegedly battling stage 4 liver cancer.

The development was disclosed by fellow actor and filmmaker Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, in a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday evening.

According to him, Ekubo had been privately battling liver cancer since 2024 and had undergone treatment, including a liver transplant, in an attempt to recover.

He said the actor briefly returned to work after the procedure but later suffered complications when the transplanted liver reportedly failed.

Stanley added that Ekubo’s condition worsened in recent weeks before he eventually passed away.

He further disclosed that the late actor’s remains had been deposited in the morgue, while urging the public to avoid spreading unverified claims about the circumstances surrounding his illness.

“Alex was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2024. After undergoing treatment and a liver transplant, he briefly returned to work. Unfortunately, the liver failed again and complications arose, and his condition deteriorated until his passing,” he stated.

The announcement has triggered widespread reactions across social media, with fans, colleagues and industry stakeholders mourning the loss of one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, known for his roles in romantic comedies and drama films.

His family is yet to issue an official public statement as of the time of filing this report.
