Army nab suspected terrorist ringleader in Zamfara market
Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected terrorist kingpin, identified as Kachalla Halilu, during an intelligence-led operation at the Shinkafi Weekly Market in Zamfara State.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering developments in the Lake Chad region, the operation was conducted by troops of the 8 Division Garrison after receiving credible intelligence that the suspect had been spotted at the market.
Security sources disclosed that the troops swiftly mobilised to the area and successfully apprehended Halilu without any resistance.
Items recovered from the suspect include a motorcycle, a mobile phone, a cap, and livestock medication.
The arrest is considered part of ongoing efforts by security forces to track down and dismantle criminal and terrorist networks operating in parts of the North-West region.
“The troops responded promptly to the intelligence report and successfully arrested the suspect during the operation,” the sources said.
According to Zagazola, the suspect and the recovered items have been handed to military intelligence personnel for further investigation.
The arrest is said to be part of ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks operating across Zamfara and other parts of the north-west.
Security officials said investigations to determine the suspect’s level of involvement in criminal activities and to identify possible collaborators are ongoing.
Zamfara is one of the states most affected by banditry and other violent crimes, with security forces intensifying operations against armed groups operating in the region.
