Democracy Day: Chaos as Sowore collapses after Police tear gassed protesters in Abuja

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was reportedly rushed to a hospital after collapsing during a confrontation with police officers at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Democracy Day.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred when security operatives attempted to disperse protesters who had gathered to demonstrate against insecurity, rising economic hardship and what they described as poor governance in the country.

The protest drew dozens of activists and members of civil society organisations who converged on the popular protest ground to express their concerns over the state of the nation.

Eyewitnesses claimed that tensions escalated after police officers moved in to break up the gathering. During the operation, tear gas canisters were reportedly fired at the protesters, causing confusion and forcing many participants to flee the area.

Amid the commotion, witnesses said Sowore collapsed and was later taken to a hospital for medical attention. Details about his condition were not immediately available at the time of reporting.

It was reported that chaos erupted as protesters scampered for safety amid clouds of tear gas. In the confusion, Sowore was reportedly affected by the tear gas and subsequently lost consciousness.

Supporters and fellow activists immediately rushed to his aid and evacuated him from the protest ground. Sources close to the activist said he regained consciousness while being transported away from the scene in a vehicle.

Following the incident, Sowore has now been reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for further examination and treatment.

The incident heightened tensions at the Democracy Day protest, where demonstrators had gathered to express concerns over rising insecurity, economic challenges and governance issues in the country.
