England suffer World Cup setback as determined Ghana force goalless draw
England missed the chance to secure an early place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being held to a frustrating goalless draw by Ghana at Boston Stadium on Monday.
After their impressive opening victory over Croatia, expectations were high for Thomas Tuchel’s side, but they struggled to break down a disciplined Ghanaian defence.
England dominated possession for long periods but lacked creativity and cutting edge in the final third. The Three Lions failed to register a shot on target until the 57th minute and were repeatedly frustrated by Ghana’s compact defensive setup and dangerous counter-attacks.
Tuchel introduced Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers in search of a breakthrough, with Saka forcing an excellent save from Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
England came closest to scoring late in the match when substitute Nico O’Reilly headed against the crossbar, while Marc Guehi saw a goal-bound header cleared off the line.
The result leaves England top of Group L but still needing a positive result against Panama in their final group-stage fixture to guarantee qualification for the round of 32.
