Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Road in Abuja, where former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo was recognised, Wike lamented Nigeria’s absence from football’s biggest tournament despite the country’s rich football history.

According to the minister, it is painful to see several smaller nations competing at the World Cup while Nigeria is missing from the global showpiece.

“We are not happy. I have seen small countries that I have never even heard of before playing at the World Cup, but Nigeria is not there,” ‘so Yobo, tell them, we aee not happy’, Wike said.

Nigeria failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Super Eagles missed the tournament despite the expanded format featuring 48 teams.
