US city re-elects Nigerian man as Deputy Mayor
Nigerian-born public official Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba has been re-elected as the Deputy Mayor (Mayor Pro Tem) of the City of Orangeburg in South Carolina, United States.
His new two-year term will run until 2027.
The announcement was made on Sunday in a Facebook post by Peter Agba Kalu, who congratulated him and encouraged the public to celebrate the achievement.
Kalu-Agba, who also represents his district on the City Council, previously served as Deputy Mayor but stepped down earlier in line with a new state law that limits the Mayor Pro Tem to a two-year tenure before another election must be held.
The law also bars immediate re-election until after another cycle, allowing former holders to contest again if they choose.
He returned to the position after the tenure of his successor elapsed and will continue to serve concurrently as both Deputy Mayor and council member.
His current four-year city council mandate is expected to lapse in 2027, when he may decide whether to seek re-election.
