Who Is Emmanuel Nnorom? Meet banking luminary succeeding Tony Elumelu as UBA chairman
The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced the appointment of veteran banker and corporate executive, Emmanuel N. Nnorom, as its incoming Group Chairman, following the planned retirement of billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu after 12 years at the helm of the bank’s board.
The appointment, which is subject to regulatory approval, will take effect on August 21, 2026, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance guidelines for non-executive directors.
Nnorom takes over one of Africa’s most influential banking institutions after building a career spanning more than four decades across banking, finance, auditing and corporate leadership.
Born on April 7, 1958, Nnorom studied Accounting and related services at Templeton College, Oxford University, where he completed his programme in 1996.
He began his senior banking career at Diamond Bank Plc in January 1996 as General Manager in charge of Operations and Branch Businesses.
He later held executive positions at Equitorial Trust Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank before joining NUB International Bank as General Manager for Finance and Planning in 2001.
In 2004, he moved to Standard Trust Bank as General Manager for Operations and Control, remaining there until the bank merged with UBA in 2005.
His profile within UBA continued to grow, culminating in his appointment as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa in January 2013.
In that role, he supervised the bank’s operations across several African countries during a period of significant expansion.
Beyond banking, Nnorom also served as President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Transcorp Plc, where he oversaw strategic investments across the power, hospitality and agriculture sectors, helping strengthen the conglomerate’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading publicly listed companies.
A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Nnorom is widely recognised for his extensive experience in corporate governance, financial management and institutional leadership.
His appointment signals the beginning of a new leadership era at UBA as the financial institution prepares for life after Tony Elumelu’s successful 12-year tenure as Group Chairman.
