Former Canadian lawmaker Goldie Ghamari confronted Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in a tense appearance on Piers Morgan’s show, accusing him of lying about the scale and nature of attacks on Christians in Nigeria.

The heated exchange, which aired on Tuesday, began after Morgan presented figures from advocacy groups alleging mass killings of Christians and large-scale attacks on churches.

Ghamari argued that the Nigerian government has consistently downplayed the crisis and insisted the situation amounts to “targeted ethnic cleansing”.

According to her, the minister’s dismissal of the reported figures was “proof of a government that refuses to face the truth”.

Ghamari, who linked Nigeria’s insecurity to what she described as jihad-driven violence, argued that the pattern of attacks mirrors global extremist movements.

She drew a comparison with the October 7 Hamas assault on Israel, saying the signs were too similar to ignore.

She also raised concerns about what she claimed were Nigeria’s quiet ties with Iran, pointing to images of Nigerian schoolchildren holding portraits of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Ghamari said this connection should worry the international community.

On the religious identity of President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, she insisted that their shared Islamic faith cannot be separated from what she sees as the government’s failure to protect Christians.

Ghamari accused Tuggar of avoiding direct questions, saying: “I was a politician for seven years. I can tell when someone is lying and avoiding the truth. That’s exactly what this foreign minister is doing, and shame on him for lying.”

She maintained that even though Muslims have also been victims of violence, it does not erase what she called “a clear and targeted campaign against Christian communities”.

In her view, the Nigerian government must be pressured internationally to acknowledge the scale of the killings and act decisively.

Tuggar rejected her claims, calling them ignorant and inflammatory, but Ghamari insisted that the facts are consistent and documented by multiple rights groups worldwide.

The interview grew more tense until Morgan ended the segment abruptly.
