Bauchi 2027: APC picks ex-Bala Mohammed campaign DG Faruk Mustapha as Deputy Gov candidate
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State has resolved the issue surrounding its deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 election, naming former Commissioner for Special Duties and Rural Development, Faruk Mustapha, as the running mate to the party’s governorship candidate, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar (SAN).
The development ends weeks of speculation over who would emerge as the APC’s deputy governorship candidate as preparations for the 2027 governorship election gather momentum.
Confirming the nomination while speaking with journalists, Mustapha said he had accepted the offer, describing it as a call to service.
“Yes, I have been nominated as the gubernatorial running mate and I have accepted the nomination. It is a call to service and I can’t reject such a call,” he said.
He expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by the party leadership, pledging to work diligently if elected.
According to him, his record in public service has earned him the trust of the people.
“The people know our capabilities and decided to trust us with the responsibility of leadership. We will not fail them,” he added.
Mustapha recently defected from the Allied People’s Movement (APM), where he had aspired to secure the party’s governorship ticket, before joining the APC.
Speaking on his partnership with former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, Mustapha said the APC flag bearer possesses the experience required to lead Bauchi State.
He argued that Abubakar’s previous tenure as governor gives him a clear understanding of the state’s challenges and the policies needed to address them.
“He is not a newcomer to the job. He knows exactly what to do, and it is only fair to allow him come back to complete the good things he started,” Mustapha said.
The former commissioner also expressed confidence in the APC’s chances in the 2027 governorship election, insisting the party is well-positioned to reclaim power in the state.
Mustapha remains a prominent figure in Bauchi politics, having previously served as Director-General of Governor Bala Mohammed’s 2023 re-election campaign before parting ways politically with the governor’s camp.
Meanwhile, the APC State Organising Secretary, Sallau Kafi, confirmed that the party leadership, in consultation with its governorship candidate, has forwarded Mustapha’s name and relevant credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its deputy governorship candidate.
