Just-In: Pandemonium as early morning fire ravages Spar Shopping Mall in Calabar (Photos)
Pandemonium broke out in Calabar, Cross River State, following an early morning fire that reportedly gutted parts of the Spar Shopping Mall.
The incident occurred in the early hours of today, with the scene witnessing confusion as people gathered around the shopping complex.
Very Nigerian Journalist was at the scene and captured the situation as the fire outbreak unfolded.
“About three fire service trucks have arrived. They are trying to pump water from SPAR borehole to try to put out the fire. It is not known if anybody is trapped inside but there is confusion here at the car park,” she said.
He added that firefighters at the scene declined to comment on the incident.
The extent of damage and whether there were casualties could not immediately be established.
The incident reportedly caused panic around the shopping complex, with activities at the car park thrown into confusion as firefighters battled to contain the flames.
SPAR, a major retail outlet in Calabar, is located around the Watt Market area, close to Bogobiri, a predominantly Hausa-Fulani community in the city. The outlet commenced operations in Calabar in 2012.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the cause of the fire, extent of damage and possible casualties as efforts to contain the incident continue.
The cause of the fire and the extent of damage were yet to be officially ascertained.
