Country music icon Dolly Parton buried beside late husband Carl Dean in Nashville

Music icon Dolly Parton has been laid to rest beside her late husband, Carl Dean, following a private funeral attended by family members in Nashville, Tennessee.

Parton, who died last week at the age of 80, was buried on Friday at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum, the same cemetery where Dean was laid to rest.

Her great-niece, Lainey Parton, delivered an emotional tribute after the burial, describing the legendary singer as “granny” and admitting that her death still did not feel real.

She said she would miss Parton’s voice, laughter and hugs, adding that her aunt had always made the younger members of the family feel loved.

Lainey also recalled how Parton encouraged her dreams and supported her through beauty school.

“She didn’t just tell me to chase my dreams, she helped me get there,” she said.

The family thanked fans and well-wishers for their messages and flowers and asked that donations be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library instead of sending flowers.

The literacy programme, founded by Parton, provides free books to young children.

Parton’s death has prompted tributes from fans and musicians around the world. Candlelight vigils have been held in several US cities, while a book of condolence and flowers were placed at her graveside in Nashville.

A tribute concert was also held at the Grand Ole Opry House on Saturday, bringing together several country music stars to celebrate her life and career.

Parton’s niece Jada Star performed “The Orchard”, a song she recorded with her aunt in 2024. Country star Jelly Roll also made a surprise appearance during the finale, joining Carly Pearce and other performers for a rendition of Parton’s hit song “9 to 5”.

Meanwhile, Tennessee’s governor has announced plans to name Nashville International Airport after the singer in recognition of her contribution to music and the state.

Parton enjoyed a career spanning seven decades and became one of the most influential figures in country music. She was also widely known for her songwriting, philanthropy and efforts to promote children’s literacy.

Her legacy continues to be celebrated by fans and fellow artists following her death.
