Panic as container truck crashes into broken-down LAWMA truck in Lagos

A 20-foot container truck has crashed into a broken-down Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) truck at Apakun, along the inward Iyana-Isolo route in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a post on its official X account on Thursday, sharing a video from the scene.

LASTMA said its rescue team had been sent to the location to manage the situation and assist with clearing the affected vehicles.

The agency added that a crane and a high-capacity tow truck had also been deployed to remove the vehicles and help restore normal traffic movement along the route.

The agency stated, “We recorded an overnight accident at Apakun inward Iyana-Isolo, involving a broken-down LAWMA truck and a 20-ft containerised truck which rammed into it.

“A crane machine and high-capacity tow truck have been activated.

“The LASTMA Rescue Team is presently at the scene, and the casualty recorded has been taken to the hospital.”

In the video shared by LASTMA, a victim could be seen lying on the floor at the scene of the accident.

However, Very Nigerian could not independently verify the identity of the victim, the severity of the injuries or whether the person was dead or alive.

LASTMA did not provide further information about the victim in its post, including the nature or extent of the injuries sustained.

The accident occurred amid ongoing concerns over the safety of heavy-duty vehicles, particularly container trucks, on Lagos roads.

Breakdowns involving trucks can also create significant obstructions and increase the risk of collisions, especially on busy routes.

Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists and operators of heavy-duty vehicles to observe road safety measures and ensure that broken-down vehicles are properly marked and removed from carriageways as quickly as possible to prevent secondary accidents.
