The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to adopt a crowdfunding model that will enable Nigerians to contribute financially to the party’s activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, disclosed this during an interview with Trust TV, saying the initiative would help reduce the influence of wealthy individuals, popularly known as “moneybags”, on the affairs of the party.

Director said the party was studying the crowdfunding strategy used by the Obidient Movement during the 2023 elections and would adopt a similar approach to enable members and supporters to contribute according to their financial capacity.

“We should be inventive, creative and innovative in the way we fund our party. Every Nigerian should have the opportunity to own the party,” he said.

“We don’t want a party that is hijacked and solely sponsored by moneybags, because that would allow them to dictate what happens within the party.”

According to the NDC spokesman, the proposed system would be structured to promote transparency and accountability, with contributors able to track how their funds were utilised.

He said professional financial experts and auditors would also be engaged to oversee the management of the funds.

Director disclosed that the party had yet to determine a ceiling for individual donations, but said a limit would be announced after consultations with relevant stakeholders.

He said the party would scrutinise substantial donations before accepting them, particularly where there were concerns about the source of the funds.

“If somebody decides to donate N500 million to us, it will be left to the party leadership to decide whether to accept it,” he said.

Director explained that the party would be cautious about accepting funds that could expose it to legal or political risks.

He stressed that the crowdfunding initiative would not be designed exclusively for wealthy Nigerians, saying ordinary citizens would also be able to make contributions based on their financial capacity.

“We are not saying it must be millions of naira. It could be N1,500 or whatever amount you can afford,” he said.

The NDC publicity secretary said the proposed funding model was aimed at ensuring broader participation in the party’s activities while preventing individual wealthy donors from gaining disproportionate influence over its decisions.

He added that the initiative would form part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections as political activities intensify across the country.
