The Labour Party (LP) in Sokoto State has elected Haliru Dikko as its new governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Dikko emerged as the party’s candidate during a substitution primary held in Sokoto on Tuesday.

His emergence followed the withdrawal of the candidate earlier elected to represent the party in the 2027 governorship race.

Speaking after the exercise, the state Chairman of the Labour Party, Abubakar Yawale, said the substitution process was carried out with Dikko’s consent and in the presence of relevant party officials and stakeholders.

Yawale said, “All the state executives were here, INEC officials were here, security agencies were here, and our party supporters across the state were also present.

“This is to tell you that this is legal. We notified all the security agencies. The Commissioner of Police is aware, the Director of Security and the Commandant of the NSCDC are all aware of our activities.”

He added that the party’s national headquarters and the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission were also notified of the exercise.

According to him, the absence of the newly elected candidate from the venue did not invalidate the process, stressing that his consent had been obtained and all necessary documents had been signed.

“All that we need is his consent, and he has given it. His running mate is here, all the party executives are here, and all his documents have been signed,” Yawale said.

The chairman described Dikko as a grassroots politician with extensive experience in local government administration, saying his background would give him an advantage in the 2027 contest.

“He is popular; he is a grassroots man. He worked from the local government to the zone and to the state. He has been to almost a third of the local governments in the state,” Yawale said.

He challenged voters to compare Dikko’s credentials with those of other governorship candidates, saying, “Among all the gubernatorial candidates in other political parties, there is none better than our candidate. Go and check who he is.”

In his acceptance speech, Dikko thanked the party leadership and members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work towards presenting the Labour Party as a credible alternative in the state.

“I accept this responsibility with humility and a strong commitment to serve,” he said.

“I pledge to work with our party leadership, candidates, members and the good people of Sokoto State to build a united, peaceful, prosperous and progressive Sokoto.

“Together, with the support of our people, we shall present a credible alternative and pursue victory for the Labour Party in 2027.”

The substitution primary followed the withdrawal of the party’s previous governorship candidate, who emerged from the earlier primary election held in May 2026.
