One killed as sand-laden truck rams into motorcycle on Lagos expressway

A yet-to-be-identified adult male passenger on a motorcycle has been killed in a road accident involving a sand-laden tipper truck along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The crash occurred on Wednesday at Ilasa Bus Stop, inward Mile 2.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa responded to the incident after receiving a distress call at about 3:18 p.m.

According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident involved a tipper truck loaded with sand, with registration number 19F 992FG, and a motorcycle.

The male passenger on the motorcycle died in the crash, while emergency officials responded to the scene to manage the situation.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was caused by reckless driving as the tipper driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the motorcycle from behind.

“Tragically, an adult male passenger on the motorcycle lost his life as a result of the collision.

“In line with established emergency response protocols, the LASEMA Response Team, in collaboration with the LRU Paramedics, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, who were all present at the scene, professionally managed the situation. The remains of the deceased were recovered, bagged with dignity by the Agency’s responders, and handed over to family members present at the scene in accordance with best practices.

“For safety and to prevent further gridlock, the affected tipper truck and motorcycle were subsequently moved off the carriageway and taken to Ilasamaja Police Station for further investigation.

“The operation has been concluded and all responders have returned to base while normal traffic flow has been restored in the area.”

The Permanent Secretary commiserated with the family of the deceased and appealed to motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise caution, observe traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving, in order to prevent avoidable loss of lives on the road.

He reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to protecting lives and property through rapid emergency response across the state.
