ADC suffers fresh defection as former DG Umar Salah joins APC
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State has suffered another defection after its former Director-General, Alhaji Umar Salah, joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was announced in a statement signed by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Sokoto State Government House, on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
Salah was received into the APC by the Chairman of the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Umaru Nagwari Tambuwal, with the support of the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ladan Ala.
The defection adds to recent political realignments involving the ADC in Sokoto State as parties continue to strengthen their structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He joined the APC shortly after meeting with Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the Government House in Sokoto on Saturday morning.
Explaining his decision, Salah said Governor Aliyu’s projects across the state influenced his decision to leave the ADC.
According to him, “Governor Ahmed Aliyu had done a lot for the state through the execution of various developmental projects aimed at improving the quality of life of the citizenry, hence the need to rally around the Governor and support his administration.”
Salah also promised to give his full support to the governor and said his followers would support the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Receiving him into the party, Tambuwal praised Salah for joining the APC and assured him that he would receive equal treatment among party members.
“There was no discrimination within the APC,” he said.
The statement added that the ADC had recorded the defection of several prominent members across Sokoto State’s 23 local government areas.
