BREAKING: INEC clears Wike’s ally, Kingsley Chinda, for Rivers governorship race

Published

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has included Kingsley Chinda among the 19 names on its list of governorship candidates for the 2027 election in Rivers State.

Chinda, a former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and an ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, appeared at number five on the list released by the electoral commission on Saturday.

His inclusion has drawn attention because he was previously a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while his emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate had generated questions about his political affiliation and reported defection.

Reports of his alleged defection to the APC had not attracted significant public attention before his name appeared on the list.

Electoral Act Provisions Raise Questions

Chinda’s inclusion has attracted interest amid renewed scrutiny of political party membership requirements following the Supreme Court’s decision concerning provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

The provisions, identified as Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2), concern party membership records and eligibility requirements for candidate nomination.

The development prompted questions about the status of some politicians whose party affiliations or membership records had come under scrutiny.

Despite the attention surrounding the matter, Chinda appeared on INEC’s final list of governorship candidates for Rivers State.

His inclusion on the list, however, should be distinguished from any separate legal determination concerning compliance with party membership and nomination requirements.

Further details about the circumstances surrounding his emergence as the APC candidate and his reported defection were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
