We’ve conducted our own polls, Tinubu will win 2027 election — APC Chairman Yilwatda
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has claimed that internal surveys conducted by the ruling party indicate that President Bola Tinubu is ahead of his potential challengers ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Yilwatda made the claim during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he said the party had conducted polls across the states and obtained figures suggesting that Tinubu was leading the race.
“We have done fact-finding; we are leading. We have done our polls. We have our own polls that give us the real statistics across the states,” he said.
When asked whether the surveys showed that Tinubu would win the 2027 election, the APC chairman replied, “Of course!”
Yilwatda also dismissed suggestions that the ruling party was threatened by opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), associated with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), associated with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.
He argued that the opposition parties’ performance in previous elections gave the APC confidence ahead of the next general elections.
Comparing Tinubu with Atiku, the APC chairman described the incumbent president as “far better” than the former vice-president.
Yilwatda also defended the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, arguing that its tax reforms had widened the tax net, increased government revenue and provided benefits for the poorest Nigerians.
On electricity, he said the administration had introduced changes that empowered state governments to generate, transmit and distribute electricity.
The APC chairman, however, acknowledged the hardship Nigerians were experiencing amid rising petrol prices but maintained that the situation would not last indefinitely.
“What we are passing through in Nigeria, for example, at this moment, is temporary. The increase in the cost of fuel is temporary. Nigerians believe in us,” he said.
Addressing allegations that the APC shields its members from prosecution, Yilwatda said some party members were already facing court proceedings, insisting that membership of the ruling party did not place anyone above the law.
He also disclosed that the party was reviewing its presidential campaign council list and would inaugurate the body soon.
On political groups supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid, Yilwatda said he had no objection to individuals or organisations, including the Rainbow Coalition associated with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, backing the president.
He also dismissed the “Tinubu Must Go” campaign, describing it as an opposition-driven effort that, in his view, did not reflect the position of most Nigerians.
