Explain how you will fund your campaign promises – Tinubu challenges Atiku, Obi, other presidential candidates
Tinubu gave the warning in a post on his X account on Sunday, stressing that government policies must be financially sustainable and backed by clear implementation plans.
President Bola Tinubu has challenged politicians seeking to lead Nigeria to explain how they intend to finance their campaign promises, warning that commitments without credible funding plans could impose additional burdens on Nigerians and future generations.
Tinubu gave the warning in a post on his X account on Sunday, stressing that government policies must be financially sustainable and backed by clear implementation plans.
He said leaders must strike a balance between providing immediate relief to citizens and protecting the country’s long-term financial future.
“As President, I have a duty to provide relief today without compromising our children’s future,” Tinubu stated, adding that sustainability and credible planning had guided his administration’s decisions, including those he described as difficult.
The President argued that campaign promises could appear attractive when candidates failed to explain how they intended to fund them. He maintained that delaying the cost of such commitments would not eliminate the financial burden but merely transfer it to citizens and generations yet to come.
“Anyone seeking to lead Nigeria should be prepared to explain what their promises will cost, how they will deliver them, and whether they can sustain them,” he said.
Tinubu urged aspiring leaders to provide clear answers on the financial implications of their proposals, insisting that political commitments should be assessed not only by what they promise to deliver but also by whether they are affordable and sustainable.
He added that making promises without addressing their costs could leave Nigerians with the responsibility of settling the bill in the future.
The President also referred to the experiences of Nigerians identified as Blessing, Ada, Abigail and Kabir, saying their stories demonstrated how government investments could affect people’s daily lives.
He further acknowledged a request from Emmanuel, which he said served as a reminder of the work that remained to be done.
According to Tinubu, Emmanuel’s request highlighted the needs of Nigerians who were still waiting for access to essential services.
The President said expanding access to affordable transportation remained one of the government’s responsibilities, adding that the Federal Government would continue working with state governments to improve transportation affordability across the country.
Tinubu reiterated that his administration would pursue collaboration with state governments to extend access to affordable transport while maintaining that political aspirants must explain how they intend to finance and sustain their proposed policies.
