Fleetwood beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties to reach EFL Cup quarter-finals
League Two side Fleetwood Town have pulled off a major upset by defeating Arsenal on penalties to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
The lowest-ranked side in the competition advanced after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, with Conor Haughey scoring the decisive penalty to send his team through.
Haughey kept his composure from the spot, sending goalkeeper Illan Meslier the wrong way to seal a memorable victory for Fleetwood.
The match was also marked by a controversial moment for Arsenal, as Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute, leaving the Gunners to finish the game with 10 men.
Play was delayed for eight minutes after a drone was spotted flying nearby, briefly interrupting the encounter.
In another result, Bradford City secured a place in the last eight with a 2-0 victory over Peterborough United.
The draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled to take place after Wednesday’s remaining matches, with Fleetwood now preparing for the possibility of another high-profile tie.
