Tension as unknown gunmen open Fire on Gov Alex Otti’s advance convoy
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has assured the public of his safety after a group of fleeing gunmen attacked his advance convoy in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Tuesday morning.
The incident, which occurred near the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, briefly heightened concerns about the growing spate of insecurity in the South-East.
According to information released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the governor was nowhere near the area at the time of the attack, as he was not part of the convoy that came under fire.
The three officials involved were on an advance duty assignment to the airport when they were ambushed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen between Umuowa and Ihite junction, just before the airport turnoff.
Although the surprise attack caused panic, Ukoha confirmed that no life was lost in the incident and emphasised that Governor Otti remains unharmed.
He added that the public should disregard any misleading reports suggesting the governor was directly involved, stating that security agencies have been notified and appropriate measures are being taken.
As of the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Command had yet to issue an official response, leaving questions about the identity, motive, and possible trail of the attackers.
