Otti visits Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto Prison, says release talks now in advanced stage
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Sunday paid a private visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, reassuring him that ongoing efforts to secure his release had entered a more decisive phase.
Governor Otti was accompanied by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma. Officials of the Sokoto State Government were also present during the visit.
In a statement issued afterward, Ekeoma said the governor encouraged Kanu to remain resolute, noting that engagements initiated more than two years ago, long before the IPOB leader’s transfer to Sokoto, had been intensified both at the political and administrative levels.
According to him, Otti expressed confidence that the matter would ultimately be resolved “administratively,” adding that he was optimistic Kanu would regain his freedom soon.
The governor also informed Kanu that the Sultan of Sokoto had expressed support for a peaceful and lasting resolution of the matter.
Ekeoma said Otti recounted, humorously, the Sultan’s light-hearted remark that Kanu was now his “subject” and might soon be turbaned, a comment that reportedly drew laughter from the IPOB leader.
Kanu was described as being in high spirits, engaging freely with the governor and expressing gratitude for the visit.
He commended Otti for the ongoing infrastructural and governance reforms in Abia State, urging him to remain focused on delivering good governance to the people.
He also offered prayers for the governor and his delegation before they departed the correctional centre.
The visit is the latest in a series of political and diplomatic engagements around Kanu’s detention, which continues to attract national attention and calls for dialogue.
