Adebayo Adedamola on Tuesday clinched the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2026 Osun State election, securing a sweeping victory at the party’s primary held in Osogbo, the state capital.

Adedamola scored 919 votes out of the 957 valid ballots cast.

The chairman of the electoral committee, Humphrey Abba, who announced the results, said 20 votes were declared void, adding that an unnamed aspirant had earlier withdrawn from the contest.

“The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned,” Abba declared.

The primary, which drew significant attention, proceeded despite the inclusion of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name on the ballot, even after he publicly resigned his membership of the PDP.

Delegates were reminded that any vote cast for Adeleke would not count, as confirmed by Sunday Solarin, secretary of the primary committee. Voting commenced shortly after accreditation closed at about 11:35 a.m.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitored the exercise, alongside a delegation from the PDP national headquarters led by Abba.

Security was heavy at the venue, with personnel of the Department of State Services, the police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps stationed at all exit and entry points.

Adeleke’s resignation letter, dated November 4 and addressed to the chairman of his ward in Ede North Local Government, cited unresolved crises within the PDP’s national leadership as the reason for his departure.

He thanked the party for the platform that produced him as senator and later as governor.

His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, later confirmed the development.

The exit of Adeleke further deepened uncertainty within the Osun PDP, which had already complained of internal disputes affecting the primary’s earlier December 2 timetable.

While some party leaders suggested the governor may still return if the party’s issues are resolved promptly and recognised by INEC, no definitive position has emerged.

According to the schedule released by INEC for the August 8, 2026 Osun governorship election, political parties have until December 15 to submit the names of their candidates.

With Tuesday’s landslide victory, Adebayo Adedamola now carries the PDP’s flag into the 2026 contest, pending ratification and submission to the electoral commission.
