Panic gripped residents of Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday after unidentified gunmen opened fire near the Afor Market Junction, leaving several persons feared dead.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the busy market area in the evening and began shooting indiscriminately, sending traders and passersby running for safety.

One resident, who witnessed the incident from a distance, said the assailants arrived “in a commando-like fashion” and immediately unleashed gunfire on unsuspecting members of the community.

“The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack. The entire community is shaken,” the source said.

Another eyewitness added that the scene quickly descended into chaos, with bodies lying in pools of blood while survivors fled in different directions.

Shortly after the incident, disturbing video clips surfaced online, showing residents scampering for safety and several victims lying motionless on the ground.

Community Leadership Reacts

Confirming the attack, the President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, described the incident as “tragic and senseless.” He said security agencies had been contacted and investigations were underway.

“This evening, I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at the Afor Market Junction. The incident resulted in multiple casualties caused by unknown assailants,” Okoye said in a statement.

“I strongly condemn this heartbreaking act of violence and the attempt to disrupt the peace of our beloved community. I appeal to all Ndi Nawfia to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate with security operatives as they work tirelessly to restore normalcy.”

He extended condolences to families of the victims and assured residents of the Union’s commitment to supporting peace and security efforts.

Police Response

Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, proved unsuccessful as of press time.

However, a senior police source confirmed that an investigation had commenced.

“The police have launched an investigation into the attacks and are working to apprehend the perpetrators.”

“We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that we will do everything possible to bring the culprits to justice,” the source said.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and authorities have yet to release the official casualty figure.
