Prof Stephen Odey attains prestigious notary public status
Senator Professor Stephen A. Odey, Esq., has been formally sworn in as a Notary Public, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished legal career.
The oath of office was administered by the Chief Judge of Cross River State, Hon. Justice Akon B. Ikpeme, on Monday, December 15, 2025.
The office of a Notary Public, as provided for under the Notary Public Act, 2023, is regarded as one of the most prestigious responsibilities in legal practice. Notaries play a critical role in the authentication, certification and validation of legal instruments, especially in matters with cross-border and international implications, making the office increasingly relevant in today’s globalised legal environment.
Appointment to the office is subjected to a rigorous and highly selective process overseen by the Supreme Court of Nigeria under the authority of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Only legal practitioners of proven integrity, competence, experience and seniority are considered worthy of the position.
Beyond its ceremonial value, the title of Notary Public is widely seen as a mark of professional excellence and credibility.
It signals that the holder has been thoroughly vetted and entrusted by the highest judicial authority in the country, thereby enhancing professional standing and public confidence.

The swearing-in ceremony also coincided with his birthday, making the occasion a double celebration.
