FIRS unveils new identity, rebrands as Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS)

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially changed its name and corporate identity to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s transition to a new tax regime scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.

The new name, logo and corporate identity were unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja by the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Mr Zacch Adedeji, following the enactment of the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act, 2025.

President Bola Tinubu signed the Act into law in June 2025, formally dissolving the FIRS and replacing it with the NRS as Nigeria’s central revenue authority.

With the passage of the law, the NRS assumes an expanded institutional mandate under the Federal Government’s sweeping tax reform programme, aimed at restructuring revenue administration and strengthening fiscal sustainability.

Speaking at the unveiling, Adedeji said the rebranding represents a strategic repositioning of Nigeria’s revenue system to align with the country’s economic transformation agenda.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi, Adedeji described the new identity as a reflection of a renewed commitment to efficiency, service delivery and institutional coherence.

“The unveiling of the NRS identity reflects a renewed commitment to a more unified, efficient and service-oriented revenue system, one that is aligned with Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda and global best practices,” Adedeji said.

He described the new logo and brand elements as a defining moment in the evolution of Nigeria’s revenue administration framework, noting that the rebrand signals continuity of purpose while strengthening institutional capacity.

According to him, the transformation represents a forward-looking approach to supporting taxpayers and advancing national development.

Adedeji further assured Nigerians that transparency, collaboration and service excellence would remain at the core of the NRS’ operations.

“The Nigeria Revenue Service remains committed to transparency, partnership and service excellence. This new identity marks not an end, but the beginning of a stronger relationship between the revenue authority and the Nigerian public—built on trust, clarity and shared prosperity,” he added.

The rebranding comes amid ongoing public debate over Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws. President Tinubu has repeatedly reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to implement the reforms as scheduled, dismissing calls for their suspension.

The President noted that while some of the tax laws took effect on June 26, 2025, others will commence on January 1, 2026, describing the reforms as a long-term intervention to promote fairness, competitiveness and economic sustainability rather than an attempt to increase the tax burden on citizens.

Meanwhile, the revenue authority recently announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has automatically become the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians, a move aimed at simplifying tax administration and expanding the tax net.
