Bandits attack Niger market, kill 30, abduct many
No fewer than 30 people have been feared killed and several others abducted when armed men suspected to be bandits attacked a community in Niger State.
The attackers, believed to be operating from the Kainji Lake National Park, were said to have stormed a village market in Kabe District of Borgu Local Government Area. During the raid, the bandits reportedly set the market on fire.
Residents said the assailants burned down stalls and looted food items and other goods before fleeing the area. The attack caused panic as traders and villagers ran for safety.
It was further gathered that the gunmen shot at villagers and kidnapped many people along routes leading into the vast Kainji Lake National Park forest.
The exact number of those abducted was not immediately known as efforts to account for missing persons continued.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, while confirming the incident, said a joint security team had visited the scene, and efforts were ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims.
“Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, some persons were also kidnapped,” Abiodun said.
