Parts of the Katsina metropolis have been plunged into darkness following a fire incident that affected a major power facility in the state.

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) confirmed the development in a public notice issued on Monday by its Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Bala Sani.

According to the statement, the fire involved a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer located at the IBB Way Injection Substation. The incident occurred late on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Sani explained that the fire led to a power outage in areas supplied by the substation, adding that technical teams have been mobilised to assess the extent of the damage and begin necessary repairs.

He appealed to affected customers to remain patient, assuring them that KEDCO is working to restore electricity supply as soon as possible.

The electricity distribution company said the cause of the fire outbreak had yet to be determined, noting that its technical team had been deployed to the site to investigate the incident and assess the extent of the damage.

KEDCO explained that affected areas were isolated as a safety measure to protect lives and property, adding that the outage impacted several parts of Katsina metropolis.

The areas affected include Kofar Kaura, Government Reserved Area, Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, Kano Road and the surrounding environs.

While apologising to customers for the disruption, the company assured residents that safety and speedy restoration of the electricity supply remained a priority.

KEDCO said it regrets the inconvenience caused and assured customers that safety and timely restoration remain its topmost priority.

The notice read, “Kano Electricity Distribution Company regrets to inform its esteemed customers in Katsina of a fire incident involving a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at IBB Way Injection Substation which occurred in the late hours of yesterday, Sunday, 4th January 2026.
