BREAKING: Super Eagles thrash Mozambique 4–0 to reach AFCON 2025 Quarter-Finals

The Super Eagles of Nigeria cruised into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday with a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique in their Round of 16 clash.

Eric Chelle’s side delivered a dominant performance against the Mambas, with goals from Ademola Lookman, a brace from Victor Osimhen, and a late strike by Akor Adams sealing Nigeria’s most convincing win of the tournament so far.

Nigeria wasted no time asserting control, opening the scoring in the 20th minute when Lookman calmly finished off a clever lay-off from Adams. The Atalanta forward’s goal was his third of the tournament, maintaining his record of scoring in every match he has featured in at AFCON 2025.

Five minutes later, Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s advantage, arriving at the back post to convert another well-worked move, once again created by Adams. The Super Eagles carried their momentum into the second half and struck again just two minutes after the restart, as Lookman turned provider, setting up Osimhen to slot home his second goal of the night.

The Galatasaray striker’s brace took his tally to three goals at the tournament and 34 goals in a Super Eagles shirt, further cementing his importance to Nigeria’s title push.

Adams capped off an impressive individual display in the 75th minute, firing a powerful shot into the roof of the net to complete the rout and underline Nigeria’s superiority.

The victory marked Nigeria’s fourth consecutive win at AFCON 2025, making the Super Eagles the only team to score four goals in a single match at the tournament so far. It is also the first time Nigeria have recorded four straight wins at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Monday’s result extended Nigeria’s dominance over Mozambique, recording a fifth consecutive victory against the Mambas since their previous meeting at AFCON 2010.

The Super Eagles will now face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between Algeria and DR Congo in the quarter-finals, scheduled to take place at the Marrakesh Stadium on Saturday, January 10, as Nigeria chase a return to continental glory.
