INEC cannot appoint PDP leaders, says Turaki-led NWC

The NWC urged INEC to exercise restraint, noting the pending Court of Appeal matters that could affect the leadership dispute.

The Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against appointing leadership for the party.

The warning was issued by Ini Ememobong, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, while reacting to INEC’s quarterly consultative meeting with political parties, which was attended by the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC).

Ememobong said the invitation extended to some former members of the PDP, who claim to lead a caretaker committee, contravenes the party’s constitution.

“We are aware that INEC extended the invitation to some former members of our party who are purporting to lead a so-called National Caretaker Committee to represent our party, whereas there is no such provision in our constitution,” he said.

He described the action as “vexatious and capable of causing widespread breach of peace,” but assured that the Turaki-led NWC would respond through all available legal channels.

Ememobong added that the current INEC leadership should have exercised restraint, given the ongoing matters pending before the Court of Appeal, which could significantly affect the issues under consideration.

He urged PDP members to remain calm and confident that the judiciary would soon resolve all leadership disputes, stressing:

“We assure that the rebirth movement of our party, under the able leadership of Tanimu Turaki, SAN, is steady and secure.”

“It will ultimately surmount all these challenges to present a stronger and more united party to Nigerians as a credible alternative to the ruling party.”
