Francis Nwifuru has relaxed the curfew earlier imposed on Amasiri community in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, restricting movement from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The governor announced the adjustment on Tuesday while briefing journalists after a State Security Council meeting held at the New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki.

The previous curfew had restricted movement from 2 p.m. to 10 a.m. following the deadly attack on Okporojo in Oso-Edda, Edda Local Government Area, where four people were reportedly beheaded.

Nwifuru said the relaxation was part of ongoing security measures but warned that the Amasiri community’s failure to produce the severed heads of the victims after the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum would attract more stringent actions.

He added that schools in Amasiri would remain closed for safety reasons as investigations continue.

The governor also confirmed that suspects arrested in connection with the killings would be charged to court.

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to restore lasting peace and ensure justice for the victims.

The Okporojo attack reportedly occurred on January 29, 2026, when unidentified armed men allegedly ambushed the community and set several houses ablaze.

A viral video circulating online showed burning buildings as residents called for urgent government and security intervention.

In the aftermath of the incident, Nwifuru dissolved the Amasiri community development union leadership, removed all village heads, sacked government appointees from the area and withdrew the certificate of the traditional ruler, effectively dethroning him.

The visibly angered governor described the killings as barbaric and vowed to demonstrate the authority of government in addressing the crisis.

He assured residents that those responsible would be decisively dealt with, stressing that the lives lost would not be in vain.
