Residents flee as fire engulfs petrol station in Anambra
Residents and passers-by in Ojoto, Idemili South LGA, Anambra State, were thrown into panic late Saturday when the Oransonic Petrol Station along the Oba–Nnewi New Road erupted in flames.
Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze began while a fuel-laden truck was being opened for discharge, quickly engulfing the station building, four pumping units, nearby shops, and the adjacent Nwereowe Healing Centre.
A video circulating on social media captured the chaos, showing residents and motorists fleeing as smoke and flames consumed the area.
Eyewitness Mama Uzor said, “It was a black Saturday at the filling station… the truck carrying the fuel burst into flames and immediately ignited the fire, destroying property within the premises.”
At the onset, no firefighters were reportedly on site, and staff along with locals attempted to contain the fire themselves. Fortunately, there were no confirmed casualties as of Sunday, though authorities are yet to provide official figures.
The Media Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, led by Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed they would investigate the incident and release further details.
The cause of the fire remains under review, and residents have been urged to stay clear of the area while emergency personnel complete their assessment.
