International Women’s Day: NUJ calls for greater inclusion of Women in Leadership

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day, calling for stronger efforts to promote gender equality and greater inclusion of women in leadership.

In a statement signed by the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, the union urged governments at all levels in Nigeria to prioritise inclusive policies that support the full participation of women in governance, leadership and decision-making processes.

According to the union, women represent a significant part of Nigeria’s population and play a crucial role in national development, yet their representation in political, economic and social leadership positions remains far below expectations.

The NUJ stressed that sustainable development and democratic governance cannot be achieved without the active involvement of women.

“Ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, employment, political participation and media leadership will strengthen national development and social justice,” the statement said.

The union also called on public and private institutions to create safe and supportive environments that enable women journalists and professionals to thrive without discrimination, harassment or inequality.

It further encouraged the media to continue amplifying women’s voices, highlighting their achievements and advocating policies that advance gender equality across the country.

As the world marks International Women’s Day, the NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender balance within the media profession and supporting initiatives that empower women and girls nationwide.

The union also urged policymakers, civil society organisations and development partners to collaborate in ensuring that women are fully included at all levels of governance and national development.
