Plateau varsity punishes 76 students over exam malpractice

The management of Plateau State University has sanctioned 76 students found guilty of engaging in examination malpractice.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Jos by the institution’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Masara Kim.

The university said the affected students were penalised following investigations into the misconduct, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining academic integrity and discipline on campus.

Kim said the action was approved by the university’s Senate during its 102nd regular meeting, chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the institution, Prof. Moses Galadima.

He added that the decision followed a report presented to the Senate by its Committee on Examination Misconduct.

According to Kim, the affected students committed the offences during the second semester examination for the 2024/2025 academic session.

“The committee investigated 76 students apprehended during the second semester examination for the 2024/2025 academic session.

“Offences such as possession of mobile phones in examination halls, written notes, and inscriptions on body parts related to examination questions were committed by the students.

“After deliberations, the Senate approved punishments in line with the provisions of the students’ handbook.

“The sanctions include rustication for one academic session, compulsory carryover of affected courses, and outright expulsions in severe cases,” he said.

Kim said the management reaffirmed the university’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice.

He added that the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Shedrach Best, had over time emphasised the university’s commitment to integrity, discipline, and sound moral values.

University of Abuja expelled 28 students in February for offences including exam malpractice, cultism, result falsification, and other misconduct.

Similarly, Bayero University Kano in January expelled 62 students and rusticated 17 others over examination misconduct.
