Sule Lamido declares bid for PDP Chairmanship, vows to strengthen Party Democracy

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lamido, who is also a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and one of the party’s founding members, made the announcement on Monday through a post on his Facebook page, expressing confidence in his ability to rebuild and reposition the PDP for future success.

He revealed that he would visit Wadata Plaza, the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, to purchase his nomination form.

“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of national chairman,” Lamido wrote.

“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable,” he added.

According to Lamido, his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to strengthen internal democracy within the party and prepare it for the upcoming elections.

The PDP, which led Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is set to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC) at its forthcoming national convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In August, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) zoned the presidential ticket to the South, and in line with its zoning tradition, the national chairmanship position was reserved for the North.

The slot was further micro-zoned to the North-West, with Lamido, former Kaduna Governor Ahmed Makarfi, and ex-Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki among those reportedly eyeing the position.

Jigawa, Lamido’s home state, is one of the North-Western states.
