ADC youth wing gives INEC 72-hour deadline, threatens nationwide protest
The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a fresh turn, as the party’s National Youth Wing issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the faction led by Senator David Mark or face nationwide protests.
The youth wing also called for the immediate resignation of Prof. Joash Amupitan as chairman of INEC, accusing the commission of mishandling the situation.
Speaking during a media conference in Abuja alongside a coalition of civil society organisations, the National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, warned that failure by INEC to act within the given timeframe would trigger mass protests across the country.
He stressed that the youths would not stand by and watch what they described as an attempt to undermine the party’s leadership structure.
They called on the National Assembly to exercise their constitutional oversight by investigating the matter towards initiating appropriate actions, including the removal of the INEC Chairman as time is of essence and in the interest of the nation’s Democracy .
The group asked the INEC Chairman to” Publicly apologize to Nigerians for alleged unconstitutional and partisan conduct.
Last week, A planned protest by the opposition party was suspended for more consultations as heavy security was deployed at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain law and order.
