Rivers Assembly: After mass defection to APC, 10 Lawmakers stay back in PDP ( Full List )
The political crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly deepened on Friday following the mass defection of 17 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite the dramatic switch, 10 lawmakers have reaffirmed their loyalty to the PDP, insisting that the party remains their political home.
In a move to assert their authority and preserve legislative continuity, the remaining PDP lawmakers convened and adopted the auditorium of the legislators’ quarters as the official and lawful chamber of the House.
The decision forms part of a new resolution aimed at ensuring that the Assembly continues to function despite the ongoing turmoil.
During the session, the 10 PDP lawmakers also selected new officers and administered the oath of office to strengthen the House’s minority leadership structure.
The newly designated officers include:
Minority Leader
Deputy Majority Leader
Minority Whip
Deputy Minority Whip
The lawmakers present at the sitting were:
1. Hon. Mrs. Emilia Lucky-Amadi – Obio/Akpor
2. Hon. Justina Emeji – Emohua
3. Hon. Ignatius Onwuka – Etche 1
4. Hon. Mrs. Barile Nwakor – Khana 1
5. Hon. Mrs. Ezekwe Nkemjika – Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni II
6. Hon. Queen Owuma Tony-Williams – Ahoada East 1
7. Hon. Lemchi Nyeche – Ikwerre Constituency
8. Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo – Omuma
9. Hon. Iderima John Dominic – Abua/Odual
10. Hon. Mgbar Bernard – Tai
The development follows earlier reports by Very Nigerian that 17 lawmakers had defected from the PDP to the APC during plenary, a move that significantly altered the political balance of the House.
Meanwhile, the adoption of the lawmakers’ quarters auditorium as the new hallowed chamber signals an intensification of the internal dispute over legitimacy, control, and constitutional authority within the Rivers Assembly.
