Aisha Yesufu dumps ADC, joins NDC, declares FCT senatorial ambition

Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), signalling her entry into electoral politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement shared via her X handle on Wednesday, Yesufu also declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat under the NDC platform.

She explained that her decision was driven by what she described as a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s political future and her continued alignment with the vision of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the ADC to join the NDC as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she stated.

Yesufu noted that her earlier decision to back Obi influenced her move to the ADC, adding that her latest switch is a continuation of that commitment.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC,” she added.

Beyond her defection, the activist confirmed her intention to run for office, stating: “This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat.”

She also said she exited the ADC on good terms after completing her responsibilities within the party, where she served in various capacities including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary.

Describing her time in the party as “invaluable,” Yesufu expressed appreciation to party members for their cooperation and shared vision of a better Nigeria.

Her move comes amid ongoing political realignments within the opposition, following the recent defection of key figures including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi to the NDC.
