APC waives screening for Tinubu ahead of primaries, declares Him cleared

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress has waived the screening requirement for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring him duly cleared to participate in the party’s upcoming presidential primary.

The decision was reached at the party’s 188th NWC meeting held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at its National Secretariat in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the committee said the waiver was granted in line with its constitutional powers under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv), which empower it to organise and supervise party primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers in the party’s best interest.

According to the statement, the NWC based its decision on what it described as overwhelming endorsements already secured by the President from key stakeholders within the party.

These, it noted, include backing from the Progressive Governors Forum, members of the National Assembly, and other party organs, particularly at the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025.

The committee also argued that Tinubu, as the incumbent President and leader of the party, had already undergone screening ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, making a fresh appearance before a screening panel unnecessary.

“The NWC noted that, as the incumbent President and leader of the party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant and unnecessary,” the statement read.

The move effectively clears the President’s path within the party’s internal process as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
