Aiyedatiwa steps in as Ondo tertiary institutions suspend indefinite strike

Workers in Ondo State-owned tertiary institutions are expected to resume duty on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, following the suspension of an indefinite strike by the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI).

The committee comprises the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The unions suspended the industrial action after Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved a financial intervention to address some of the issues that led to the strike.

The workers had embarked on the indefinite strike on September 2, 2026, over unresolved matters arising from the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and the unions.

The strike affected workers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

In a statement jointly signed by JAC-ODSTI chairman, Comrade Tayo Ogungbeni, and secretary, Comrade Kunle Akinwonmi, the committee directed workers to return to their duty posts from Tuesday.

The committee commended Aiyedatiwa, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, and the governor’s Special Adviser on Special Duties and Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, for their roles in resolving the dispute.

It also appreciated the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and members of the public for their support during the industrial action.

JAC-ODSTI, however, urged the managements of the affected institutions to urgently address the non-financial aspects of the agreements, warning that unresolved issues could lead to another industrial dispute.

The committee said the suspension of the strike was intended to allow the process of resolving the outstanding issues to continue while academic and administrative activities resume across the institutions.
