A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the crashed Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) linked to British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua, to March 17, 2026.

Kayode appeared before the court on Wednesday over allegations bordering on reckless driving.

During the proceedings, R.D. Kadiri, counsel representing the Ogun State Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), told the court that prosecutors required more time to assemble evidence and present witnesses for the case.

He explained that the case file had already been forwarded to the Ogun DPP by the police for further review.

The presiding magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, subsequently adjourned the matter to March 17 to allow the prosecution to properly prepare its case.

PREVIOUS COURT PROCEEDINGS

On January 20, Richard Nigiwe, counsel to the police, asked the court for adjournment of the case to allow the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and present it to the attorney-general of the state through the department of public prosecution for legal advice.

But Olalekan Abiodun, the defence counsel, objected and argued that since three witnesses are in court, the trial should start.

However, Somefun, the magistrate, ruled that the case should be adjourned to February 25 to enable the prosecutor seek legal advice.

The magistrate ordered that the case be duplicated and sent to the Ogun attorney-general.

BACKGROUND

On December 29, 2025, the car conveying Joshua, a former world heavyweight boxing champion, and two of his close associates crashed into a stationary truck around the Sinoma area, near Sagamu, Ogun state.

The former boxing champion and three other passengers were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the SUV collided with a stationary truck.

While Joshua survived the incident with minor injuries, his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — died.

Ghami was Joshua’s long-time friend and his strength and conditioning coach, while Latif served as his personal trainer.

On December 31, 2025, the boxer was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after treatment for the injuries sustained.
