APC failed leadership responsible for U.S. redesignation of Nigeria – Obi

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep worry over the United States government’s recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), warning that the move and threats of possible military action should alarm every patriotic Nigerian.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi described the U.S. stance as a wake-up call, stressing that Nigeria is facing an unprecedented wave of insecurity, with thousands of lives lost in recent months.

He cited Amnesty International’s report indicating that over 10,000 people have been killed across the country since May 2023, lamenting that the “unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable.”

According to him, the worsening security situation could have been avoided with competent and visionary leadership.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present administration, what is most unfortunate is the absence of competence, commitment, prudent resource management, patriotism, and passion among the APC-led government to effectively govern and lead Nigeria to a nation where no one is unjustly oppressed or killed,” he said.

Obi also stressed the importance of maintaining Nigeria’s long-standing partnership with the United States, saying both countries share democratic values and mutual interest in regional stability.

“The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and other plausible engagements by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose,” he added.
