Bandits ambush Police patrol in Bauchi, gun down five officers
The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed that five officers were killed and two others injured after suspected bandits ambushed a police patrol team in Sabon Sara village, Darazo Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the command said the officers were on an intelligence-led visibility patrol on Saturday to prevent possible farmer-herder clashes when they came under heavy attack from unidentified armed youths.
The ambush occurred around 11:30 a.m. and involved personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), 10 PMF Bauchi, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), and the State Intelligence Department (SID).
The officers who died in the attack were: DSP Ahmad Muhammad of the State Intelligence Department; ASP Mustapha Muhammad of 10 PMF; Inspectors Amarhel Yunusa and Idris Ahmed of 10 PMF; and Corporal Isah Muazu of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
Two other inspectors, Isah Musa and Yusuf Gambo, both from the State Intelligence Department, sustained injuries during the shootout.
Police spokesperson ASP Ahmed Wakil said reinforcements were deployed immediately after the attack.
He explained that the Divisional Police Officer in Darazo led a team to the scene to evacuate the injured officers and recover the bodies of the fallen personnel.
The injured were rushed to the general hospital in Darazo, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the morgue.
Wakil added that several of the attackers were neutralised during the exchange of fire and that efforts are ongoing to track down others who fled.
“The command is fully committed to ensuring that the criminals responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and expressed condolences to the families of the officers who died.
“These brave men paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” he said, adding that although the task remains difficult, the command will continue to work tirelessly to protect the people of Bauchi State.
The police command urged residents to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies.
