BREAKING: Anthony Joshua discharged from hospital after accident that killed two associates
British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing star, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the former world boxing champion has been “deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home.”
The accident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team rammed into a stationary truck along the busy expressway.
Tragically, two of Joshua’s close associates — his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami — lost their lives in the crash.
Joshua survived the accident with minor injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital in Lagos, where he received medical attention.
According to Omotoso, the boxer was treated at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, before being discharged on Wednesday afternoon.
He added that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, later visited the funeral home in Lagos where the remains of his late associates are being kept, to pay their final respects.
“Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, deeply appreciate the public concern and the outpouring of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident,” Omotoso said.
On Tuesday, the Ogun State Police Command disclosed that a burst tyre caused the accident. However, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had earlier stated that preliminary investigations pointed to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as contributing factors.
Although born in England, Joshua maintains strong ties with Nigeria and frequently visits his hometown of Sagamu in Ogun State. He was last in the country in 2024, during which he met several celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove.
Joshua’s latest visit to Nigeria came only days after he knocked out social media star-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an exhibition heavyweight bout at the Kaseya Centre in Miami, United States.
